9. Course Reflection

This class was great. I think there was a great balance between playing games and learning, both about game history and what makes a good game. Definitely one of the things that got drilled into my mind is iteration, which is something that can somewhat translate over to other disciplines. For example, I enjoy writing and drawing; they are both creative skills that require drafting and constantly working over something to make it better, at least in my case.

If all goes well, this is my final year at SJSU and I will graduate Spring 2021. For a while now, I’ve had my eyes set on an artist position for a mobile games company in San Francisco. It wasn’t until this class that I feel like I truly made progress towards that goal. No more excuses, I actually sat down and produced something; I worked on Astronaut Jump with Zach and started a Pride and Prejudice dating sim.

As much as I like how Astronaut Jump was coming together, I learned the most with Pride and Prejudice. This is the project I took on entirely on my own — both art and programming. It was difficult, but I did it! I made something that I feel I can continue working on.

A few years back, my little brother and I talked about making games together. He’s learning computer programming now, while I’m learning what the game creation process is like. We’re at a point where all that talk can finally be real. This class has given me the tools and confidence to create games, and I’m super thankful!
